Venice Beach Surfing Lessons
Is Santa Monica Beach a good place for surfing?
I’m staying at a friends house in Hollywood, and coincidentally Santa Monica is the closest beach. I’m taking my younger brother and sister, and they want to take surf lessons. I looked up reviews online, and they said that Santa Monica is FILTHY!
However, a lot of other reviews say it is a fine place to stay. Should I go to Venice beach or even Zuma/Malibu?
Santa Monica isn’t the ideal place for real surfers. The waves are notoriously closed out and get wind chopped fairly early in the day. There are plenty better waves to ride up and down the coast. That said, Santa Monica is a very user friendly beach. It’s easy to park here, has a sandy bottom which doesn’t freak novices out, and is so shallow you can practically walk out into the line-up. All these things make it feel very safe to those just getting wet. Many schools (don’t go to aquasurf they are clueless) teach beginner lessons here because the whitewater is plentiful and fun for newbies to practice on. If you guys aren’t hard-core surfers hunting for uncrowded, perfect shaped waves, then i’m sure you will have a blast there. It’s crowded, full of great people-watching, and very “California” scene if you’re just visiting. When you’re done with the water you can go cruise the Venice boardwalk which as a local, I think is hideous, but visitors seem to love it. Heal The Bay gave Santa Monica an A- to A+ on their last beach report card (as long as you’re not under the pier). I say go for it!
Malibu is an amazing site, but the water is filthiest here and you should definitely not get in the water if you don’t know what you’re doing. If you just want to kick back and enjoy some amazing surfers doing what they do best, then Malibu can’t be beat. It’s quite a scene. If you have the time head up PCH afterward for a bite at Malibu Seafood. The food is delicious and the drive is breathtaking.
Zuma. Well the water is heavier there and it’s much further away from you… Probably not worth the trip coming from Hollywood.
